Position Overview
Steed Industries is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimator to join our dynamic
team in Montana’s concrete construction sector. This key role is responsible for driving
company growth through accurate bidding, maintaining strong profit margins, and fostering
enduring client relationships that promote repeat business and referrals. The Estimator
oversees the entire bid lifecycle—from initial invitation to contract award—balancing
technical precision with a customer-focused approach. This position is essential to both
operational success and strategic market expansion, consistently representing Steed
Industries with professionalism across all client and industry interactions.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development
• Identify and pursue new project opportunities; develop relationships with General
Contractors, Architects, Engineers, and key industry stakeholders.
• Monitor bid boards and network actively to position Steed Industries as a preferred
vendor.
• Strategize and execute approaches to secure new projects, highlighting the
company’s value proposition and reputation in Montana and beyond.
Bid Management
• Manage and coordinate the complete bid process, ensuring all submissions meet
client expectations and project requirements.
• Perform detailed plan takeoffs, accurately calculating material volumes, labor
requirements, and project schedules using construction drawings.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners (vendors, subcontractors) to
prepare comprehensive, competitive bids.
• Utilize company tools such as Procore and BID TRACKER to maintain up-to-date,
accurate records of all bid activity; provide weekly management updates.
• Analyze project plans, specifications, and details to identify the full scope of work,
materials, and potential challenges.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates using Excel, incorporating labor, materials,
equipment, overhead, markup, and margins.
• Assign and manage cost codes for precise job costing and financial tracking.
• Develop well-organized, competitive bid proposals that align with client
expectations and company standards.
• Maintain organized records of all estimates, takeoffs, and supporting documents for
future reference.
• Monitor trends in material costs and labor rates to ensure estimates are both
competitive and realistic.
Risk Assessment and Negotiation
• Review project scope and contracts to evaluate technical and commercial risks.
• Negotiate with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to secure the best pricing and
terms, especially for unique or high-value items.
• Propose alternatives or adjustments to mitigate potential risks during the pre-
construction and proposal phases.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement
• Build and maintain strong client relationships throughout the proposal and
negotiation process.
• Understand client decision drivers, proactively resolve concerns, and facilitate
successful contract execution.
• Work collaboratively with project stakeholders to drive projects to close and build
long-term partnerships.
Communication
• Maintain prompt, courteous, and professional communication with clients, vendors,
and internal teams throughout the bidding process.
• Prepare clear, persuasive written proposals and accurate management reports;
present bid findings and recommendations as needed.
• Ensure open channels of written and verbal communication to support smooth
project transitions.
Coordination and Collaboration
• Attend weekly Bid Review Meetings to discuss new opportunities, update on bid
status, and help prioritize proposals.
• Coordinate with architects, superintendents, project managers, and operations
teams to ensure bid feasibility and alignment with resources.
• Actively participate in team meetings to refine and optimize bidding and project
delivery processes.
Reporting and Documentation
• Keep precise, organized records of bid statuses, client feedback, and all proposal
modifications for transparency and ongoing improvement.
• Provide detailed weekly reports to management, including bid outcomes,
competitive analysis, and industry developments.
Qualifications
• Proven success in generating profitable work and growing revenue within the
construction industry; concrete or site/civil experience preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of construction methods, sequencing, and risk
management.
• Proficiency with takeoff and estimating software; skilled with Procore and BID
TRACKER.
• Demonstrated ability to generate new business, interpret bid invitations/RFPs, and
manage multiple simultaneous bids independently.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, with advanced skills in Excel.
