Job Summary
The Studio Museum in Harlem is looking for a highly motivated, energetic museum education professional to be responsible for the coordination of the Museum’s School and Educator Programs.
The Studio Museum’s School Programs are a rich resource for teachers and students to explore and examine art and culture. School Programs including multi-session school partnerships, artist classroom visits, and pre/post museum sessions reflect our investment in making the Museum a natural extension of the classroom. Forming creative partnerships with schools serving pre-K-12th grade students is at the core of our school programs, working collaboratively to enhance curricula and encourage innovative teaching practices.
The array of Educator Programs at the Studio Museum acknowledges teachers as professionals at the center of education, whose significant contributions have the most profound effect on the lives and learning of students. Educator Programs reflect the Museum’s commitment to reaching beyond the traditional classroom and museum visit by responding to the increasing demand for quality arts education from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Together with the Director of Education, work to increase and deepen participation of school audiences in Museum activities, and increase the level of school community awareness of and interest in Museum’s mission, collection and exhibitions.
- Develop new relationships and deepen existing connections with teachers, school administrators and the wider NYC school community to increase the Museum’s school programs in Harlem and the surrounding area.
- Coordinate aspects of multi-session school partnerships with New York City schools serving PreK-12 grade students, including planning meetings, in-class sessions, parent/family workshops, and evaluations, working closely with Museum Educators in creating curricula.
- Liaise between school partners, Museum Educators, and the Museum as necessary for partnerships.
- Coordinate all Educator Programs, including Professional Development Workshops for Educators, Open House for Educators, professional development workshops for partner schools, and other contracted professional development workshops for CTLE credits.
- In collaboration with the Director of Education/Access & Community Programs Manager, support Museum Educators in the development of online and printed education resources, including lesson plans and resource guides, that introduce key ideas behind works in the collection and exhibitions, and address core subject areas in school curriculum.
- Collaborate with appropriate departments to create social media content and promotional materials for School & Educator Programs.
- Contribute to the museum community through publications, conference presentations, and the facilitation of professional development sessions at other museums and cultural institutions.
- Liaise with department leadership to provide perspective and input on School Educator Programs goals, vision and growth.
- Participate in annual budget planning for School & Educator Programs.
- Collaborate with Learning & Engagement Department staff to interview, select and supervise Museum Educators and Education Interns, as needed.
- Conduct program evaluations and maintain statistics, and documentation of programs, with support from the Learning & Engagement Assistant.
- Lead inquiry-based tours for students, teachers, and parents as needed.
- Participate in the vetting, training, and evaluation of Museum Educators.
- Maintain statistics, records, and documentation of programs.
- Write year-end reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience with community outreach and developing relationships with educational, and social / cultural organizations
- Demonstrated ability in the successful development and maintenance of school partnerships and educator programs
- Strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to work with close attention to detail
- Proficiency with and accuracy in using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and other related software applications
- Flexible and able to work well as part of the Education team and Learning & Engagement Department
- Knowledge of contemporary art and artists’ practice
- Passion for the dual mission of achieving artistic and educational excellence
Education and Experience
- Candidates must have a BA/BFA or MA/MFA in art, art history, art education, arts administration, or related fields.
- 3-5 years of relevant professional experience including work with NYC K-12 students, teachers and school administrators; school programming with responsibilities in planning, development, and implementation of programs.
- Museum education experience is required, classroom teaching experience a plus.
Physical Demands

Work Environment
- This position is an exempt position and may require working more than forty (40) hours during a work week.
- This position is considered a non-exempt position for purposes of federal wage and hour law, which means that you will be eligible for overtime pay for hours more than 40 in a given workweek.
- Fast-paced environment with varying levels of guests and employees present.

Compensation
$65,000 annually
Salary is commensurate with experience within the guidelines of a small not-for-profit. A competitive benefits package is provided, including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, a retirement account, and substantial vacation time.
