About the role
The Service Maintenance Manager is responsible for coordinating service, repairs, and maintenance across barges, boats, and heavy equipment. The Service Maintenance Manager must lead a high-performing service team while remaining flexible to shifting priorities and project demands. This position thrives on problem-solving, customer service, and embracing operational challenges as growth opportunities.
What you'll do
- Lead, mentor, and support service technicians through training and hands-on assistance.
- Manage the service department to maintain all fleet equipment, marine assets, and machinery at peak operational readiness.
- Develop responsive service programs that account for the unpredictable needs of marine projects, including sudden pivots to urgent repairs.
- Perform inspections and troubleshoot service issues with an emphasis on barges, lifts, and dredging equipment.
- Prioritize flexibility when supporting field crews and barge operations, adjusting resources quickly to meet changing needs.
- Maintain detailed records of service work, fleet status, and repairs performed.
- Collaborate with project managers to anticipate service needs before they become operational bottlenecks.
- Ensure the department operates with strict adherence to safety, DOT, FMCSA, and marine operational standards.
- Drive continuous improvement by welcoming new technical challenges and innovative service solutions.
- Manage service parts inventory and supplier relationships to ensure timely support.
- Assist in budgeting and forecasting service and maintenance expenses.
- Willingness to work in varied environments, including on-water project sites.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training preferred.
- 3–5 years of service management experience in a heavy equipment, marine, or fleet environment.
- Preferably a strong technical knowledge of barges, lifts, marine propulsion systems, diesel engines, and hydraulic equipment.
- Leadership experience managing and developing service teams.
- Ability to pivot quickly between service priorities and emergencies.
- Proficiency with CMMS systems and service scheduling tools.
- Strong understanding of regulatory compliance in transportation and marine fields.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Willingness to adapt to fast-changing project demands and travel when needed.

Working Conditions and Physical Efforts:
- Work involves walking, talking, hearing, lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying up to 100 pounds occasionally in addition to using material handling equipment.
- May be required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities require close vision assessments. Moderately loud noise levels in the work environment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds as needed.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Steel-toe boots are required.
Travel Requirements: Travel to job sites, may include overnights.
