Manager, Engineering (Tactical) - Remote

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Tactical Engineering Manager to lead and inspire a team of engineers while staying hands-on in building, deploying, and maintaining cloud infrastructure and applications within the military, tactical, and security industries. This individual will leverage their technical expertise and leadership skills to support the growth of Teamworks’ products into DoD IL-2/IL-5 environments, ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of critical services.

In this player-coach role, you will mentor and manage a small team of engineers while also contributing directly to the engineering work. Your role will combine leadership, software, and systems engineering to drive performance optimization, incident management, and infrastructure scalability. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and high performance.

  • Stay hands-on in designing, implementing, supporting, and monitoring cloud infrastructure, ensuring world-class reliability for high-stakes environments.

  • Own and evolve best practices and standards for infrastructure-as-code across multiple product lines, evangelizing these practices within the team and broader engineering organization.

  • Use data-driven insights to enhance service resiliency, minimize downtime, and optimize system performance.

  • Oversee and participate in incident response and resolution to ensure minimal downtime and impact on critical services.

  • Develop and maintain robust monitoring and alerting systems to guarantee high availability and proactively address performance concerns.

  • Manage infrastructure scaling to handle varying loads, ensuring seamless operations across multiple regions.

  • Automate operational processes to improve efficiency, reduce manual interventions, and optimize workflows.

  • Collaborate with the Information Security and Compliance team to ensure all resources adhere to DoD security specifications.

  • Drive team alignment on key metrics, such as SLOs, and lead efforts to meet or exceed those targets.

  • Champion compliance efforts, including analyzing applications for alignment with CC SRG and NIST 800-53 standards, and implementing risk mitigation strategies.


Requirements:

  • Proven leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to manage, coach, and develop a high-performing team.

  • Expert-level knowledge of Linux operating systems and cloud infrastructure, with deep experience in AWS.

  • Strong hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools, including Terraform, Ansible, and Packer.

  • Familiarity with Docker, containers, and their orchestration in large-scale environments.

  • Proficiency in programming/scripting languages (Python, Go, Java, C#, etc.).

  • In-depth knowledge of system design, performance tuning, and troubleshooting in cloud environments.

  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog.

  • Strong understanding of incident management and disaster recovery practices, with the ability to guide the team through critical moments.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of experience in automating infrastructure and supporting AWS environments.

  • Previous leadership experience with teams responsible for infrastructure as code and pipelines.

  • Active Secret Clearance.

  • Security+ certification.

  • Active or previous CAC card.
