Purpose of the Role:

The Bright Hospitality Management is seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Director of Sustainability & ESG to lead the development and execution of our company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy across our hotel properties. In this pivotal role, you will champion sustainability initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing our environmental footprint, and creating long-term value for both stakeholders and the communities we serve. 

 

As a strategic and hands-on leader, you will integrate ESG principles into daily operations, develop data-driven sustainability goals, and drive progress toward carbon reduction, waste minimization, and sustainable sourcing. You will work cross-functionally to implement sustainable practices, enhance guest experiences, and communicate ESG progress to internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be proactive, with the ability to translate vision into measurable action while advancing our company’s commitment to sustainability. 


This is a primarily remote role with some travel required.


Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and Execute ESG Strategy: 
  • Lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive ESG strategy that reflects the company’s sustainability goals and supports long-term business success in the hospitality industry. 
  • Develop programs that integrate energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable sourcing into day-to-day hotel operations. 
  1. Reporting & Compliance: 
  • Oversee ESG-related reporting and disclosures, including compliance with industry standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and TCFD. 
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of sustainability metrics to internal and external stakeholders, including investors and regulatory bodies. 
  1. Stakeholder Engagement: 
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams, including hotel management, operations, and sales, to ensure sustainability goals are achieved. 
  • Collaborate with external partners, such as local communities, environmental organizations, and regulatory bodies, to enhance sustainability efforts. 
  1. Sustainable Operations & Program Management: 
  • Manage sustainability initiatives that reduce the hotel’s environmental impact, such as energy usage optimization, water conservation, waste management, and carbon footprint reduction. 
  • Oversee initiatives related to the use of sustainable products, green certifications (e.g., LEED, Green Key), and eco-friendly technologies within hotel operations. 
  1. Guest Engagement and Experience: 
  • Integrate sustainability into the guest experience, promoting eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction programs, sustainable dining options, and green hotel services. 
  • Lead the development of educational campaigns to raise awareness among guests about the hotel’s sustainability efforts. 
  1. Risk Assessment & Benchmarking: 
  • Conduct ESG risk assessments to identify potential areas of concern and growth opportunities related to sustainability practices. 
  • Benchmark sustainability performance against industry standards and peers, ensuring continuous improvement. 
  1. Team Leadership: 
  • Lead, mentor, and build a team of sustainability professionals to support the implementation of ESG strategies. 
  • Foster a culture of sustainability within the hotel by training staff and integrating sustainability into performance goals. 
  1. Innovation and Partnerships: 
  • Identify and implement innovative sustainability technologies and practices that enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs. 
  • Develop strategic partnerships with NGOs, local organizations, and industry leaders to promote sustainable tourism and hospitality practices. 

Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Hospitality Management, or related field (Master's degree preferred). 
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability practices, environmental regulations, and industry standards specific to the hospitality sector. 
  • Proven experience in implementing sustainable programs and achieving measurable results. 
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence key stakeholders. 
  • Experience in managing cross-functional teams and collaborating with senior leadership. 
  • Passion for sustainability and a deep understanding of the hospitality industry’s role in environmental stewardship.

Physical, visual requirements and working conditions may include but are not limited to: 

  • Ability to work at a desk and use a computer for extended periods. 
  • Occasional travel to various properties and external meetings, requiring the ability to lift and carry luggage or materials (up to 25 lbs). 
  • Ability to attend site visits, inspections, and conferences, which may involve walking, standing, and navigating various environments. 
  • Capacity to participate in meetings, presentations, and events both virtually and in-person. 
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions during on-site property assessments or sustainability initiatives. 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Hospitality Management, or related field. 
  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in ESG, sustainability, or environmental management, with 3+ years in a leadership role. 
  • Expertise in ESG reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD, CDP). 
  • Strong project management skills and ability to drive cross-functional sustainability initiatives. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience engaging executive leadership and external partners. 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and community organizations. 
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations, compliance, and sustainability practices within the hospitality industry.

Schedule / Travel Requirements:


Travel Expectations: 

  • Ability to travel up to 20-30% of the time to hotel properties, corporate offices, and industry events as needed. 
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate time zone differences when coordinating with remote teams and stakeholders. 

Hotel Visits: 

  • Occasional visits to hotel locations to assess sustainability initiatives, meet with hotel staff, and ensure program implementation and progress. 
  • Participation in sustainability audits, staff training, and local community engagement events may require travel to various hotel locations within your assigned regions.
