About Applied Business Software, Inc.,
Applied Business Software, Inc., (ABS), the maker of The Mortgage Office®, is the industry leader in private lending and loan management technology. Since 1978, our software has powered thousands of lenders, including private money firms, municipalities, CDFIs, Tribal Nations, universities, franchisors, third-party servicers and other non-bank lenders, helping them streamline, automate, and scale their lending operations with confidence.
About the role
We’re hiring a Product Designer – AI and we’re open to both mid-level and senior designers depending on experience. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to create intuitive, modern user experiences for our first AI products.
Whether you’re growing into larger ownership or already operating at a senior level, this role offers the opportunity to design impactful, mission-critical workflows used by lending teams every day.
What you'll do
- Design intelligent, AI-powered user experiences that streamline loan intake, underwriting, decisioning, and workflow automation.
- Create end-to-end product experiences for both traditional and AI-native features — from early concept to polished UI.
- Translate ambiguous AI capabilities (e.g., model outputs, confidence levels, automated suggestions) into clear, trustworthy, user-friendly interactions.
- Collaborate with product, engineering, and data/AI teams to define how AI should work within the product — including what should be automated, recommended, or manually controlled.
- Craft user flows, prototypes, and interaction patterns that demonstrate how AI guides, enhances, or accelerates user actions.
- Run user research and usability tests to understand how lending professionals respond to AI suggestions, automation, and explanations.
- Contribute to our design system by creating scalable patterns for AI prompts, responses, onboarding, feedback, guardrails, and error states.
- Iterate rapidly based on user data, AI model behavior, and cross-functional input.
- Partner with engineering to ensure AI features are understandable, predictable, ethical, and aligned with user trust.
- Stay current on AI UI/UX patterns to help evolve our product toward a modern, intelligent experience.
Qualifications
- 3–7 years of experience as a Product Designer, UX/UI Designer, or similar role.
- Clear experience designing products that incorporate AI, LLMs, or machine-assisted workflows or a strong desire to deepen expertise in this area.
- Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and interaction design best practices.
- Proficiency in Figma (preferred) or similar tools.
- Experience designing for complex, data-heavy, or workflow-oriented software (SaaS, fintech, CRM, LOS, etc.).
- Comfortable working through ambiguity, especially when shaping experiences that combine human decisioning with machine intelligence.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable interfacing with customers — conducting user interviews, testing, and gathering real-world feedback.
- Organized, curious, and proactive — with strong problem-solving instincts.
- Comfortable being on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area, with hybrid flexibility
