Development Director

The Road Home Dane County is committed to ending the issue of family homelessness in our community. We do this by developing long-term relationships with families experiencing homelessness that change lives. We work with families, not only to relieve the immediate crisis of homelessness, but also to build skills, resources, and relationships that set the stage for long-term success. The Development Director is a pivotal role, responsible for driving The Road Home's fundraising strategies to ensure the sustainability of our programs. This position involves cultivating donor relationships, executing direct appeals, planning impactful events, and collaborating with our dedicated development and communications team, as well as the Development Committee of our Board of Directors. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about building relationships and connecting resources to our mission. Prior fundraising experience is highly valued, and a strong commitment to making a difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness in Dane County is essential.


This role involves a multifaceted approach, encompassing the strategic management of major donor relationships, the planning and execution of fundraising events, and the pursuit of grant funding opportunities. Serving as the primary liaison for major donors, the Director develops and implements personalized strategies, and progress within the eTapestry database. Beyond donor relations, the Director provides leadership to the development and communications team, overseeing daily operations and conducting performance evaluations. Financial judgement is also essential, as the Director manages the development budget, tracks expenditures, and ensures accurate reporting. This position necessitates a proactive approach to grant writing, including researching opportunities, creating proposals, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.


In essence, the Development Director is responsible for:

  • Securing financial resources to support The Road Home's programs.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with donors and funders.
  • Leading and managing the development and communications team.
  • Ensuring financial accountability.

Required Education and Experience 

  • Associate’s degree 
  • 1 year of development and/or community relations experience.
  • Proficient in Google Suite or similar software
  • Proven interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in homelessness and housing trends

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-3 years of development and/or community relations experience
  • Grant writing experience highly requested
  • Previous supervisory experience 
  • Experience within the homeless services sector
