Position Description

The Vice President of Tax supports the Chief Legal Officer as a key team member who leads the due diligence, preparation, and submission of the organization’s forms 990, 990-T and state return equivalents in partnership with an outside accounting firm and tax software. The successful candidate will enjoy organizing, managing, and building a not-for-profit tax team who evaluates the tax impact for complex nonliquid donations, alternative investments and completes related tax returns.  This position will have a significant role keeping the organization in compliance with foreign, federal, and state (SALT) tax laws.   

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support and partner with the Chief Legal Officer in leading the tax department. 

  • Actively work with the Chief Legal Officer and tax staff to develop the tax department processes and procedures and plan for the organization's growth. 

  • Review multiple K-1s for unrelated business income (“UBI”). 

  • Lead preparation of forms 990, 990-T and state return equivalents. 

  • Manage tax escrow account, including withholdings from business interest distributions. 

  • Review tax journal entries and reconciliations in partnership with the Finance team. 

  • Lead state and local tax (“SALT”) research of unrelated business income tax (“UBIT”) laws and help compose position opinions. 

  • Compose and lead staff training on compliance and tax. 

Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Tax, CPA required, dual CPA/JD preferred
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in 990 and 990-T tax preparation 
  • Ability to understand and apply complex tax laws  
  • Effective communication and project management skills 
  • Proficient multi-tasking ability  
  • Takes initiative and works well in collaboration 
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Good discernment and reasoning skills  


Work Location  
This is a full-time, salary remote position.

Compensation
Starting at $150,000 annually
