About The Information

The Information is the go-to source of in-depth reporting for the most influential leaders in technology and business. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco, our original, high-quality journalism has the power to inform the most consequential decisions shaping our future, and we’ve built a community of 700,000 active readers who depend on us to do just that. We have a financially healthy business, plenty of capital, and big ambitions to grow our team and business.

About The Role

The Information is seeking a sharp, intrepid reporter to cover the intersection of tech and politics, at a moment when Silicon Valley figures are enjoying unprecedented influence in the corridors of power in Washington, D.C. The Trump administration is pushing to unleash the AI industry by rolling back guardrails, accelerating adoption across government and defense and making the technology a key pillar of national competitiveness for the U.S. Powerful figures from the space, defense tech, crypto and semiconductor businesses are actively seeking to shape trade policies, win government contracts or simply avoid the ire of President Trump. And apps like TikTok are playing key roles in the geopolitical relations between the U.S. and China.

At the same time, the coming years could see unprecedented turbulence for tech and its political allies, if public concerns about the power of big tech, AI and the impact of social media on kids swell into full blown backlashes. If you’re energized by these topics and telling stories about them this beat has your name on it. You’ll report and write stories packed with original reporting and news that illuminate the web of connections between Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. And you’ll explain complex policy fights in clear, compelling ways for a smart, influential audience that wants to understand not just what is happening, but who is driving it and why it matters.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build an extensive source network among government officials, influential Silicon Valley donors, lobbyists and tech executives seeking to shape government policy and win contracts.
  • Deliver a combination of shorter scoops and newsy feature stories on a regular cadence—between 2 and 3 stories a month.
  • Collaborate widely with The Information’s editors and other reporters, drawing on the collective wisdom and knowledge of Silicon Valley’s most authoritative newsroom.
  • Appear on TITV, The Information’s daily live video show, to discuss your stories and other topics on your beat.

Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of writing compelling features and breaking news, ideally about politics and tech.
  • A willingness to work closely with editors to craft high-impact stories that live up to The Information’s brand of exclusive journalism. You should thrive in an environment in which you will be collaborating closely with editors to deliver the best possible stories.
  • Based in San Francisco, New York or Washington, D.C.; this is a hybrid role with in-office attendance required three days per week for those people living near SF or NY.

What success looks like in your first 6 months:

  • You should hit the ground running and be publishing by the end of your first month. Within half a year,  you should have found your footing on this beat with well-read stories that are followed by our competitors and buzzed about by our subscribers and on social media.
