Tech Reporter, Asia

About The Information

The Information is the go-to source of in-depth reporting for the most influential leaders in technology and business. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco, our original, high-quality journalism has the power to inform the most consequential decisions shaping our future, and we’ve built a community of 700,000 active readers who depend on us to do just that. We have a financially healthy business, plenty of capital, and big ambitions to grow our team and business.

About The Role

The Information is seeking a sharp, intrepid reporter to cover tech in Asia, at a moment when Chinese tech companies are making great strides in developing AI models and narrowing the gap with the U.S. The U.S. and China are locked in a race to dominate everything from AI to semiconductors and robotics. The outcome of that race will have profound ramifications in Asia and the rest of the world. Both U.S. and Chinese companies are aggressively expanding AI infrastructure and courting customers in Southeast Asia, which is shaping up to be another important pole in the global tech landscape.

In the meantime, technology in the age of generative AI has been evolving at an unprecedented pace. And the increasingly polarized world makes the consideration for each company and each government even more complicated, and at higher stakes. If you’re energized by these topics, this beat has your name on it. You’ll report and write stories packed with original reporting and news for a smart, influential audience that wants to understand not just what is happening, but who is driving it and why it matters.

In collaboration with newsrooms in San Francisco and New York, The Information’s Asia team has broken numerous agenda-setting scoops and published deeply reported features that shaped policymaking in both the U.S. and Asia. Our work has earned recognition from The Society of Publishers in Asia Awards and the Sabew Awards. This is an opportunity for a self-motivated reporter with a hunger for news, curiosity for business and technology and a collaborative spirit to work alongside some of the best editors and reporters in the industry.

What You’ll Do

  • Build an extensive source network among tech companies, startup entrepreneurs, their investors, customers and suppliers.
  • Deliver a combination of shorter scoops and newsy feature stories on a regular cadence—between 2 and 3 stories a month.
  • Collaborate widely with The Information’s editors and other reporters, drawing on the collective wisdom and knowledge of Silicon Valley’s most authoritative newsroom.
  • Appear on TITV, The Information’s daily live video show, to discuss your stories and other topics on your beat.
  • Participate in other newsroom initiatives such as The Information 50.

  • Proven track record of breaking news and writing compelling features, ideally about Asia tech.

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Based in Singapore or Hong Kong. (Applicants in Singapore must be eligible to live and work in the country. )
