Position Overview

The Innovation Research Analyst (Intern) will support Tomorrow Energy Partners' (TEP) work on the deployment and innovation policy programs of one of our clients, Clean Tomorrow, with a focus on clean energy innovation research and policy. This role is designed for a graduate student eager to apply technical and analytical training to a live, high-impact policy initiative at the intersection of energy technology, industrial strategy, and manufacturing policy.

The Analyst will provide general research and analytical support across the team's innovation policy work, while taking on a defined area of focus: long-duration energy storage (LDES) industry analysis and U.S. battery manufacturing and supply chain constraints analysis. This role reports to the Senior Innovation Analyst on the team.

Key Responsibilities

Innovation Policy & Analysis Support (40%)

  • Provide research, analysis, and writing support across the Innovation team's broader policy portfolio, including tracking legislative and regulatory developments relevant to energy innovation
  • Conduct literature reviews and synthesize technical, market, and policy research into internal memos and briefings
  • Support preparation of materials for internal strategy discussions and external meetings, including with policymakers, industry, and other stakeholders

LDES Industry Analysis (30%)

  • Track technology development, cost trends, and commercialization timelines across long-duration energy storage technologies (e.g., flow batteries, iron-air, thermal, compressed air, and other emerging chemistries)
  • Map the competitive landscape of LDES developers, manufacturers, and deployers, both domestic and international
  • Analyze policy and market drivers affecting LDES deployment, including regulatory frameworks, procurement mechanisms, tax incentives, and grid planning processes

Manufacturing & Supply Chain Constraints Analysis (30%)

  • Research and map U.S. and global battery manufacturing capacity, including cell, component, and critical mineral supply chains
  • Identify key bottlenecks and constraints (e.g., critical minerals sourcing, component manufacturing, workforce availability, permitting timelines) affecting U.S. grid-scale battery production
  • Benchmark current and projected U.S. manufacturing capacity against grid-scale battery demand forecasts
  • Support the development of policy options and recommendations — e.g., manufacturing incentives, workforce development, permitting reform, and R&D investment — for a forthcoming policy package on U.S. grid-scale battery production
  • Draft sections of analytical reports, policy memos, and briefing materials related to this work

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a graduate program in electrical engineering, public policy, energy studies, or a related field
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with the ability to work with technical, market, and policy data
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to produce clear, concise policy and technical communications quickly
  • Genuine interest in U.S. energy and industrial policy, particularly battery manufacturing and clean energy supply chains

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Coursework, research, or professional experience related to energy storage technologies, power systems, or grid operations
  • Familiarity with U.S. federal policy processes (legislative and/or regulatory)
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, Python, or R, and enterprise AI tools
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent research tasks independently
  • Strong alignment with TEP's mission to catalyze clean energy innovation and deployment across the United States

Working Conditions

  • Part-time, temporary internship position
  • 8–16 hours per week during the fall academic semester
  • One academic semester, with possibility of renewal
  • Fully remote position

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly rate: $34-41 hourly, commensurate with experience and qualifications 
  • As a part-time internship, this role is not eligible for TEP's full-time employee benefits package.
