Position Overview
The Principal BTM Construction Manager is the senior owner’s representative responsible for the safe, on-time, on-budget delivery of Tract’s behind-the-meter (BTM) power solutions serving large-scale data center campuses.
These solutions can include gas-powered assets (reciprocating engines, turbines, fuel cells), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and associated electrical infrastructure (MV switchgear, transformers, interconnection, controls). This role leads end-to-end construction execution from notice-to-proceed (NTP) through commercial operation (COD), ensuring that each plant is built to Tract’s standards for safety, quality, reliability, and scalability.
This is Tract’s anchor hire for BTM construction. The initial focus will be projects in the Reno, NV and Texas regions, with a clear path to build and lead a broader construction team as we scale to additional campuses.
Job Responsibilities:
- Own BTM power plant construction delivery
- Serve as the single accountable leader for field execution of BTM power plants from NTP through COD.
- Own safety, schedule, cost, and quality for construction activities across multiple sites.
- Lead end-to-end construction execution
- Oversee all phases of work: site preparation, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, controls, and integration with BESS and data center infrastructure.
- Coordinate and manage EPCs, general contractors, and key subcontractors, ensuring adherence to design, specifications, and Tract standards.
- Drive construction planning – sequencing, constructability reviews, and resource planning to hit aggressive timelines.
- Be the field face of Tract
- Act as Tract’s primary representative on site, leading daily and weekly construction coordination meetings.
- Surface and resolve field issues quickly via RFIs, design clarifications, and change management, in partnership with engineering and project management.
- Maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders, AHJs, utilities, and site operations.
- Drive disciplined commercial and risk management
- Enforce commercial discipline in the field: change orders, claims, allowances, contingency usage, and reporting.
- Maintain and drive a risk register specific to construction (safety, quality, schedule, cost, permitting) with clear owners and mitigation plans.
- Support procurement and legal in contract scoping, exhibit development, and performance requirements for EPCs and key vendors.
- Standardize how we build BTM plants
- Partner with engineering, operations, and product to translate lessons learned from each project into standard details, specifications, and construction playbooks.
- Contribute to standardization of site layouts, construction sequences, and QA/QC checklists across campuses.
- Help define and implement construction governance: milestones, gates, and readiness criteria for energization and turnover.
- Enable scale and future team growth
- Establish reporting, dashboards, and KPIs for BTM construction (HSE performance, schedule adherence, change order trends, punch-list burn-down, etc.).
- Mentor junior construction staff and participate in building a regional construction team as the program grows.
- Provide input into long-range resource planning for future campuses and expansions.
Baseline Requirements:
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent field experience delivering large power/industrial projects.
- Experience
- 10+ years of experience in power generation, BESS, or mission-critical energy infrastructure construction, with increasing responsibility.
- Proven track record as an owner’s construction manager, EPC project manager, project executive, or senior site manager delivering:
- Gas engine or turbine plants, BESS facilities, or similar large distributed generation.
- Projects >50 MW with MV (15–35 kV+) electrical systems and utility interconnections.
- Demonstrated experience managing EPCs and subcontractors across civil, mechanical, and electrical scopes.
- Strong command of construction scheduling, progress tracking, and recovery planning (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar tools).
- Hands-on experience with RFIs, change orders, and field-driven design coordination to keep projects on-time and on-budget.
- Proven ability to lead construction in live or near-live mission-critical environments (data centers, refineries, petrochemical, or heavy industrial).
- Skills & capabilities
- Deep understanding of construction means and methods for power plants and BESS: foundations, equipment setting, pipe and cable installation, terminations, testing, and commissioning support.
- Working knowledge of safety regulations, building codes, and electrical codes relevant to power generation and energy storage.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to distill complex construction issues into clear options and recommendations.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and competing priorities across regions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience delivering behind-the-meter or distributed power specifically for data centers or other always-on loads.
- Background with companies such as distributed power providers, rental power fleets, IPPs, or mission‑critical EPCs.
- Experience integrating engines + BESS or other hybrid power configurations.
- Professional certifications (e.g., PMP, CM-Lean, or equivalent) are a plus but not required.
Location and Travel
- Preferred Locations:
- Reno / Northern Nevada
- Texas (Austin)
- Denver
- Seattle
- Work Environment: Hybrid or remote with significant time on job sites.
- Travel: Expect 50–70% travel, primarily to Nevada and Texas sites, with additional travel as new campuses are launched.
