Data Scientist (Intelligence) - Remote

Teamworks Intelligence, formerly Zelus Analytics, is the advanced sports analytics division of Teamworks, dedicated to revolutionizing sports intelligence through data-driven insights. We are seeking a Senior/Staff Data Scientist to drive technical leadership and innovation in our Football Intelligence division. This role will focus on developing cutting-edge analytics solutions that empower NFL and collegiate football teams with actionable insights. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning, and sports tracking data, with experience in an NFL front office being highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership for football analytics, guiding model development and implementation.
  • Design and optimize advanced predictive models using tracking data and player performance analytics.
  • Lead the development of football analytics tools and metrics for scouting departments.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to productionalize and deploy models at scale.
  • Mentor and support other data scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Engage with football operations and scouting departments to translate complex analytics into actionable insights.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, integrating new methodologies into Teamworks Intelligence’s suite of products.

Additionally, a Senior Data Scientist will be expected to:

  • Provide guidance and technical mentorship for junior data scientists.
  • Plan and coordinate the development of complex projects from start to finish.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge in at least one specific methodological framework or sports analytics domain.
  • Effectively communicate and explain challenging technical concepts to both internal and external audiences.
  • Assist with recruiting and outreach for the data science team, including building a diverse network of future candidates.

Additionally, a Staff Data Scientist will be expected to:

  • Identify and recommend new research opportunities and modeling approaches to push the cutting edge of our sports intelligence platforms.
  • Design frameworks or methodological approaches to be applied to common research problems across sports.
  • Recommend strategies for developing and/or applying quantitative models to new sports or products.
  • Provide guidance and technical mentorship to both junior and senior data scientists.
  • Represent Teamworks Intelligence at conferences or through other public forums.
  • Lead model design for multiple projects and provide technical supervision on all aspects of model development.
  • Make substantial contributions across the most challenging, high-impact, and differentiated capabilities for one or more of our sports intelligence platforms.

Requirements:

  • Strong experience working with sports data, especially tracking data and player performance analytics.
  • Deep statistical expertise, including proficiency in Bayesian modeling, machine learning, optimization, and simulation.
  • Strong technical leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to guide a small team and drive large-scale analytical projects.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical findings to non-technical stakeholders, particularly in football operations and scouting.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, R, SQL, and cloud-based computing for data processing and modeling.
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product teams, and sports industry professionals.

Preferred Requirements:

  • PhD in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience in an NFL front office or collegiate football analytics department.
  • Familiarity with distributed computing, and MLOps best practices.
  • Track record of publishing or presenting research in sports analytics conferences or industry forums.

Compensation Philosophy:

For this role, the salary range is $160,000-190,000 with your final offer determined by your experience, skills, and interview performance. Every Teamworks teammate is an owner, with equity aligning your success with ours.
