Objective: The purpose of the Estimator is to develop accurate, competitive, and comprehensive project estimates for artworks and installations. This person will support UAP’s sales and project management teams in evaluating new opportunities, pricing diverse scopes of work, and identifying creative and commercially viable solutions that enhance design intent while ensuring project feasibility and profitability.

 

The successful candidate will bring both a technical understanding of fabrication and installation processes and a conceptual ability to think laterally about project delivery.


The ideal candidate will be based at our Rock Tavern, New York workshop. Occasional travel to project sites, and/or vendor facilities may be required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing project drawings, specification and contract documents.
  • Identifying project risks with solution driven responses.
  • Documenting agreed direction from project briefings.
  • Finding material and sub vendor pricing for the projects.
  • Compiling a detailed estimate in the UAP template format.
  • Compiling detailed fabrication and material information.
  • Communicating with UAP workshop team about possible project solutions.
  • Communicating with UAP sales team about budgets, methodologies, including detailed assumptions and exclusions.
  • Conducting a cost benefit analysis on materials quotes.
  • Ensure that project labor requirements are accurately calculated and broken down by fabrication, installation and management requirements.
  • Reporting on weekly progress and completed estimates for quarterly and yearly tracking on workload and successful outcomes.
  • Integrating past project performance and date into estimation process
  • Review all project plans, drawings and documentation to identifying material requirements.
  • Accurately measure drawings and calculating quantities of material and supplies required.
  • Liaise with all stakeholders for advice around structural and construction requirements.
  • Maintaining the material take-off sheet with accurate data.
  • Utilize appropriate internal resources for estimation needs.
  • Keep updated database of vendors and suppliers.

Qualifications: 

  • Ideally have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in fabrication, or art production estimating—preferably within metals, fabrication, and installations.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with subcontractors, specialty vendors, and contractors
  • Knowledge of diverse materials and production techniques, including metals, and specialty finishes
  • Familiarity with rigging, suspended installation methods, and site coordination.
  • Understanding of project documentation, construction drawings, and industry-standard contract formats.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills with the ability to present cost information clearly to both creative and technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other estimating tools; familiarity with Bluebeam, Rhino, etc. is a plus.
  • Ability to balance precision, creativity, and commercial awareness in developing pricing and project strategies.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A passion for creativity, art, and design, and enthusiasm for contributing to one-of-a-kind, world-class projects.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in cost estimating, data organization, and quantitative analysis.
  • Knowledge of material fabrication methods, installation sequencing, and constructability assessment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams across design, engineering, and project management.
  • Attention to detail and comfort working with ambiguity in conceptual project phases.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, negotiation, and critical thinking.

 Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while working at a desk and using a computer.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for long durations.
  • Frequent hand and finger use required for operating a computer keyboard, mouse, and standard office equipment.
  • Occasional standing, walking, reaching, and light lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written form.

Salary Description - $66,500 - $81,500
