Job Purpose

As we continue to expand our market share in the rapidly emerging Employee Experience platform category, we are looking for a Principal Engineer to join our Engineering Team. This is a technical leadership role held by a highly experienced software developer. With an influence across the department, their primary objective is to deliver engineering excellence, improving the standards of others and the product itself.


The Principal Engineer is the pinnacle of technical influence within the engineering organisation, setting the technical vision and driving long-term strategies for product and platform development. This role goes beyond individual projects, impacting the engineering organisation by establishing best practices, defining architectural standards, and championing innovation. As a Principal Engineer, you are not only a master of technical skills but also a mentor, thought leader, and visionary for the company’s future technology landscape. 


The successful candidate should have a demonstrable track record delivering cloud-based software products to the market. At Unily, this role does not involve being members of delivery teams or line management of developers. 


Main Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering teams to provide technical guidance and navigate the most complex problems they face.
  • Assist with architectural decisions and design, helping teams to design and build software to a high standard.
  • Lead initiatives that introduce or improve best practices, including new tools, methodologies, and standards that elevate code quality and efficiency.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to engineering leadership, providing insights into industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to shape product roadmaps, align on technical priorities, and ensure cohesive progress across the organisation.
  • Mentor engineers and other technical leaders, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across the organisation.
  • Ensure the teams and the product maintain high standards of compliance in areas such as privacy, security and process adherence.
  • Help teams adapt to working with new technologies and be comfortable with refactoring and modernising legacy code.
  • Assist with diagnosis and remediation of critical or challenging incidents. 


Requirements

  • Expertise in cloud architecture, with excellent knowledge of the Microsoft technology stack including: 
    • .net and .net framework
    • Azure cloud infrastructure and services
    • Kubernetes / AKS
    • Redis
    • SQL Server
    • Service bus (or similar broker)
    • Automated testing frameworks and technologies
    • Angular (ideally also AngularJS)
    • Microsoft Entra / AD and a good working knowledge of OAuth and OpenI
    • Azure DevOps including deployment pipelines 
  • Exemplary expertise in Microsoft .NET and the full web stack, deep knowledge of cloud technologies and architecture, and a strong understanding of modern practices like microservices and modular monoliths, with a focus on driving innovation and insight.
  • A skilled communicator with excellent written and verbal abilities, confidence in presenting technical topics to diverse audiences, and expertise in creating clear diagrams for designs and documentation.
  • A mentor and innovator with a passion for developing technical talent, a proven track record of innovation, a commitment to technical excellence, and advocacy for agile practices.

Where you’ll work 

Hybrid. 1 to 2 days in the office per week. Usually Eashing with occasional days in our London office.
