Senior DevOps Engineer

About UnityAI

UnityAI is an AI startup building the future of healthcare operations. With a $4M seed round from Max Ventures, Whistler Capital, Company Ventures, Nashville Capital Network, and other deeply connected supporters, we’re on a mission to empower healthcare providers with intelligent tools and transform how patient care is delivered.

Why we’re hiring

After a successful implementation with our first paying client, we're looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to lead the integration and ongoing security monitoring of our platform as we implement applications and AI technologies into additional client environments.

This role involves technical development and operations of our cloud infrastructure, deep involvement in Kubernetes orchestration, and ensuring the seamless integration and reliability of our products. As an early DevOps hire, you’ll be pivotal in driving technical innovation and operational excellence across the organization as we scale.

In this role, you’ll help lead:

  • Cloud operations: Develop, manage and scale our cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), ensuring optimal performance, security, and cost efficiency.
  • CI/CD and IaC: Contribute to our code-first approach to continuous integration/continuous delivery, enhancing deployment strategies and automation.
  • Containerization and orchestration: Lead Kubernetes cluster management, implementing best practices in container orchestration, scaling, and network security.
  • Continuous improvement: Collaborate with development teams to integrate the latest updates into our platform, ensuring scalability and agility.
  • Security: Implement and maintain strong security controls, including access controls, encryption, and vulnerability management.
  • System performance monitoring: Set up and manage logging, monitoring, and alerting systems.
  • Compliance: Conduct regular security audits and penetration testing to ensure compliance with security standards and healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001).
  • Disaster recovery and backup: Develop comprehensive disaster recovery and incident response plans, ensuring robust data backup and security protocols.
  • Client communication: Engage with IT leaders to drive technological innovation and operational efficiency across their complex organizations.
  • DevOps team growth: Define team roles, assist in hiring, and collaborate with DevOps engineers, cloud specialists, and IT support staff as our workload expands.

What you’ll need to be successful:

We value demonstrable knowledge and the ability to deliver real-world solutions above formal education. Candidates are expected to have experience and/or an interest in learning:

  • Cloud, containerization, and orchestration technologies: Experience with Google Cloud services, particularly Kubernetes/GKE.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code (IAC): management of applications and infrastructure dependencies using IAC and gitops workflows.
  • Identity, network, and security control management: Strong understanding of networking concepts and security controls, particularly for a microservices architecture and its deployment in a cloud-native environment.
  • Technical operations management: Advanced knowledge of security monitoring, logging, automation, and configuration management tools (e.g., PagerDuty) to deliver SLAs.
  • Healthcare domain expertise: Knowledge or eager willingness to learn about the healthcare industry and landscape, including the economics of healthcare, how hospitals and healthcare providers operate on a daily basis, and healthcare data standards and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HL7, FHIR).

Additional values, skills, and mindsets include:

  • Extreme ownership: We are a small and mighty team. When you find an issue that needs to be handled, your first thought should be to take ownership and get it done.
  • Collaboration and communication: Because we are a small, early-stage startup, everyone needs to be contributing their maximum in the areas where their talents and ability are best suited. That means communicating eagerly and collaborating with others to achieve our goals in the most efficient way possible.
  • Big-picture thinking: Everyone needs to care a lot about our broader business goals and understand how their daily work drives toward those goals.
  • Velocity and delivery: You ship solutions efficiently and effectively, maintaining a balance between speed and quality.
  • Sustainable development: We want our systems to be characterized by reliability, security, and safety. You’ll need to ship quickly while keeping an eye on minimizing technical debt.
  • Adaptability: We’re in a stage of rapid experimentation and prototyping, so you will need to be comfortable with ambiguity, change, and uncertainty. Your key priority may change tomorrow; if that doesn’t excite you, this may not be the right fit.
