Who You Are

    The Data Engineering Manager will lead a team of data engineers in designing, building, and maintaining scalable and robust data pipelines for our property catastrophe insurance business. It involves strategic planning, team management, and hands-on technical work to ensure effective data processing and analysis that supports data-driven decision-making across the organization.

    The Data Engineering Manager will also collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data architects, product managers, actuaries, data scientists, and business stakeholders, to implement and oversee data strategies that align with the company's goals.

What You'll Do

People Management and Leadership:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align data initiatives with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Lead the evaluation and adoption of new tools and technologies to improve data processing efficiency and capability.
  • Act as a liaison between technical teams and business stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into actionable business insights.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and advancements in data engineering through ongoing education and professional development. Actively drive innovation by exploring and integrating cutting-edge tools and methodologies that enhance data processing capabilities and deliver competitive advantages.
Data Pipeline Development:
  • Design, develop, and optimize scalable data pipelines using Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, and Airflow.
  • Oversee the implementation of ETL processes and ensure data is available for analysis in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure data infrastructure is aligned with best practices and supports the needs of data scientists and business analysts.
Data Governance:
  • Implement robust data quality frameworks to maintain the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of data across all pipelines. Develop and enforce standards for data quality that include validation checks and regular audits to catch inconsistencies or errors before they impact downstream processes.
  • Design and build systems that automatically monitor data for anomalies and inaccuracies. Leverage rule-based systems to detect issues such as missing values, outliers, and format inconsistencies in real-time, triggering alerts for immediate resolution.
  • Establish governance policies that ensure all data handling processes adhere to regulatory requirements and internal standards. Implement automated tracking and logging mechanisms to provide transparency and traceability of data changes.

What You'll Need

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 1 year in a leadership or management role.
  • Proven experience in building and managing large-scale data pipelines, with specific experience using Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, and Airflow being a plus.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python.
  • In-depth knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Expertise in cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure).
  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g. Hadoop, Spark).
Soft Skills:
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to align data engineering efforts with business goals.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience in the P&C insurance industry is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of data governance, privacy regulations, and compliance standards.
  • Certification in cloud computing or data engineering tools is a plus.
  • Experience working with Kanban/Agile methodologies.
