Job Purpose

As a Staff Metallurgical Laboratory Quality Engineer at VulcanForms, your mission is to ensure our Metallurgical Laboratory complies with regulatory and customer requirements while driving operational excellence across the factory. You will collaborate with Manufacturing, Logistics, Sales, and Engineering to build accurate data and metrics that improve lead-time predictability. You will lead project development and drive completion to introduce new testing capabilities to site laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of new Metallurgical Testing capabilities within site laboratory.
  • Create and validate test and inspection methods, ensuring repeatability and compliance.
  • Improve existing metallurgical testing processes for the production of materials.
  • Review new product specifications to evaluate test capabilities and recommendations.
  • Prepare project plans to accomplish assigned work. Identify and complete performance measures, including post job assessments. Meet project and schedule requirements.
  • Lead implementation of technical manuals, reports, and procedures in accordance with program quality standards.
  • Support Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) initiatives (PFMEA, Control Plans, SPC, etc.) to prevent defects and ensure verification/validation of improvements.
  • Disposition internal nonconforming material, determining if the material is usable by the customer. Works with the production areas to investigate root cause and problem solve to root cause.
  • Collaborate across Manufacturing, Logistics, Sales, and Engineering to develop reliable data and metrics that enable accurate lead times.
  • Perform process walks, operator observations, and support metallurgical team discussions to reduce variation and drive process enhancements.
  • Assure the QMS conforms to customer, internal, industry (AS9100, ISO 9001, ISO 13485), and regulatory/legal requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest advancements in metallurgy, material science, and relevant industry standards.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, aerospace, defense, or medical devices.
  • Strong knowledge of test equipment qualification and test method validation.
  • Proficient at developing test method work instructions for use by entry level employees.
  • Hands-on experience with quality systems and compliance standards (ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across shop floor and leadership levels.
  • Experience with HRB/HRC Hardness Testing, Elemental Analysis, Sample Preparation, Metallographic Imaging, Surface Roughness, Porosity, and Density Analysis.

VulcanForms offers a competitive salary and equity package. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience. 

In addition, VulcanForms provides comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; generous paid time off; and a 401(k) plan with company match. 

The annual base salary range for this position is $128,000 to $176,000.
