About the role

Reporting to a mid-level manager, the transportation supervisor is primarily responsible for the following: Ensuring that on-time delivery and customer shipping requirements are achieved (safety, cost, quality, and delivery); Managing assigned associates and equipment for optimized shipping/receiving efficiencies; Facilitating superior individual performance and fostering a team environment; Preparing/supporting weekly shipping plans that establish priorities and sequences for shipping products; establish and follow housekeeping initiatives.  Supervises and coordinates activities of Shipping/Receiving employees.

What you'll do

  • Analyze and establish safety procedures within your department and adhere to pre-established requirements to ensure the overall safety of your employees and areas.
  • Own warehouse operations including raw material, WIP, and finished goods storage, ensuring organization, space optimization, and material traceability.
  • Ensure inventory accuracy through cycle counts, audits, and proper system transactions within.
  • Oversee internal material handling processes including line feeding, WIP movement, and material staging to support uninterrupted production flow.
  • Establish and maintain standard work for material handlers, including FIFO adherence, labeling, and storage protocols.
  • Optimize warehouse layout and material flow to minimize handling, reduce waste, and improve efficiency.
  • Manage and enforce safe operation, utilization, and maintenance of all material handling equipment (forklifts, tuggers, etc.).
  • Coordinate closely with Production, Planning, and Quality to ensure material availability, proper disposition of nonconforming material, and timely movement of goods necessary to assist efforts to reduce unnecessary Raw and WIP inventory across all locations.
  • Supervise, train and lead a team of Shipping/Receiving employees in support of business needs.
  • Ensure proper packaging and preservation of product to both internal and external customers, respond to customer complaints on packaging/preservation and implement process improvements to prevent future incidents.
  • Track and order all packaging supplies to ensure we have what is needed for shipments while limiting space requirements for said supplies.
  • Assist in resolving Trade Compliance issues as necessary.
  • Maximize efficiency of your team in order to minimize overtime to the maximum extent possible.
  • Establish controls and processes to achieve 100% OTD when product is available for shipment.
  • Validate and update processes in the Document Control System as it pertains to Shipping and Receiving.
  • Work with the Planning Team to ensure your team’s capacity is not exceeded.
  • Execute any additional duties or plans required by the Materials and Logistics department.
  • Ensure proper preventative and corrective maintenance is conducted on all resident equipment (i.e. forklifts, trucks, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree (A.A) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combined education and experience.
  •  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Attention to Detail – Able to be alert in a high-risk environment; follow detailed procedures and ensure accuracy in documentation and data; carefully monitor gauges, instruments, or processes; concentrate on routine work details and maintain a system of records.
  • Quality – Able to maintain high standards; do work right the first time and inspect material for flaws reinforce excellence as a fundamental priority.
