Backend Engineer

As a Backend Engineer at Widewail, you’ll help design, build, and maintain the services that power our user-facing products. You’ll work on everything from greenfield features to improving existing systems, with a focus on delivering reliable, scalable, and maintainable code. This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll have space to solve problems creatively and the support of a collaborative, tight-knit team.

This is a hybrid role based in Burlington, VT. You’ll ideally work from our office part of the week, with flexibility for focused work from home as needed, this is not a fully remote position at this time.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that power our platform.
• Develop new features and products in a greenfield environment.
• Integrate with diverse third-party APIs and systems.
• Own the deployment, monitoring, and ongoing performance of your code in production.
• Collaborate closely with teammates on design, code reviews, and best practices.
• Continuously look for ways to improve our architecture and processes.

Education

• 4+ years professional software development experience
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional Java development experience.
• Strong experience with the Spring Framework.
• Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, Postgres).
• Solid understanding of version control workflows (Git).
• Experience working in a shared codebase on a collaborative engineering team.
• Familiarity with automated testing tools and practices (JUnit, Mockito, etc.).
• Self-driven and comfortable owning projects end to end.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AWS Lambda or other serverless technologies.
• Exposure to Kotlin.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
• Prior work in an early-stage or growth-stage company.
