Position Summary

Williamsburg substitutes support instructional continuity by facilitating live virtual classes in the absence of a mentor at Williamsburg Learning. Reporting to the Director of Academic Programs, this role delivers prepared lessons, engages students in meaningful learning experiences, and maintains a positive classroom environment. Substitutes play a key role in ensuring students continue to experience high-quality, engaging instruction even when their regular mentor is unavailable.


Essential Duties (Top 5 Roles)

1) Instructional Delivery

  • Facilitate live virtual classes using lesson plans and materials provided by the mentor.
  • Prepare in advance of assigned classes to ensure familiarity with content and instructional flow.
  • Deliver lessons clearly and confidently, maintaining pacing and structure aligned with the mentor’s plan.
  • Adapt instruction as needed to respond to student questions and engagement levels.
  • Support continuity of learning by following the provided materials and expectations.

2) Student Engagement & Classroom Culture

  • Create an engaging, energetic, and inclusive virtual classroom environment.
  • Encourage active participation and maintain student attention throughout live sessions.
  • Use effective classroom management strategies appropriate for a virtual setting.
  • Build quick rapport with students to maintain a positive and productive learning experience.

3) Communication & Reporting

  • Communicate with the mentor and/or Program Leader prior to and following coverage as needed.
  • Provide clear, concise updates on lesson progress, student engagement, and any concerns.
  • Document any notable student behaviors or issues during class sessions.

4) Flexibility & Responsiveness

  • Be available on an as-needed basis during standard school hours (8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. MT).
  • Respond promptly to substitute requests and communicate availability clearly.
  • Adjust to different subjects, class formats, and student needs across grades 6–12.

5) Professional Practice

  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with students and staff.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and preparedness for all assigned classes.
  • Maintain a distraction-free, professional teaching environment during all live sessions and ensure class time is free from outside interruptions, including having a plan in place for supervision of children under the age of 10.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; additional education preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong academic background in high school math and/or science.
  • Experience working with middle or high school students preferred.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills in a virtual setting.
  • Ability to quickly learn and deliver provided instructional materials.
  • Comfort using Zoom and digital instructional tools.
  • Basic classroom management skills, particularly in an online environment.

Working Conditions:

  • Part Time, Remote
  • 3-15 hours per week
  • Ability to attend and facilitate live virtual classes during the standard school day.
  • Ability to manage multiple digital systems simultaneously (video conferencing, chat, instructional materials).
  • Work is performed remotely and requires a quiet, professional workspace, reliable high-speed internet, and appropriate technology for live instruction.
