Anza MI is a fintech startup using technology and analytics to drive growth & innovation within the US mortgage market.
About the role
We are looking for a sharp, analytically rigorous Senior FP&A Analyst to join our finance team. This is not a role for someone content to pull last quarter's template and fill in new numbers — we want a first-principles thinker who questions assumptions, identifies inefficiencies, and is energized by using technology to perform financial analysis better and faster.
What you'll do
You will work with the CEO on our core financial planning processes, including our annual operating plan, rolling forecasts, and long-range planning model. Day to day, you will partner closely with business leaders across the organization to develop budgets, track performance against plan, and surface actionable insights that drive decision-making at the executive level.
Beyond the standard FP&A responsibilities, you will be expected to contribute to continuously improving how we work — potentially building scalable, automated reporting and modeling solutions that reduce manual effort and increase analytical depth. You will also serve as a first line of defense for organizational efficiency, actively monitoring business unit KPIs and flagging emerging inefficiencies to senior leadership before they become larger issues. We want finance to be a proactive partner, not a reactive one.
- Lead the development and maintenance of expense models, expense forecasts, and budgets with a focus on rigor, scalability, and clarity
- Partner with department heads to build bottoms-up operating plans and provide ongoing variance analysis with clear, concise commentary
- Serve as a early warning system for operational inefficiencies — continuously monitoring business unit KPI trends, identifying deviations from expected performance, and proactively escalating findings to senior leadership with actionable context
- Track and analyze KPI efficiency developments across business units, maintaining a deep understanding of what drives performance in each part of the organization and how those drivers are evolving
- Design and automate recurring financial reports and dashboards
- Participate in ad hoc financial analysis and scenario modeling to support strategic initiatives, capital allocation decisions, and business cases
- Synthesize financial and operational data into executive-ready presentations and recommendations
- Identify structural improvements to how FP&A processes are designed and executed, and drive those improvements to completion
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to raising the analytical bar across the finance function
Qualifications
Minimum Education
- MBA from a strong program (recent graduates welcome) OR 3–5 years of FP&A, investment banking, consulting, or related analytical experience
Preferred Experience
- A first principles mindset — you don't copy models, you understand why they're built the way they are and can rebuild them better
- Advanced Excel proficiency is a must: complex financial models, dynamic arrays, Power Query, and an instinct for clean, auditable spreadsheet design
- Proficiency in Python or R strongly preferred; we want someone who can script their way out of a manual process and build repeatable analytical tools
- Comfort working with large datasets and, ideally, experience with SQL/Databricks - we do not use bloated, inflexible BI tools.
- Strong communication skills — you can translate a complex financial model into a clear story for a non-finance audience
- High intellectual curiosity, low ego, and a bias toward action
