At D-Wave, we’re helping customers realize the value of quantum computing today and are shaping the quantum-driven industrial and societal advancements of tomorrow.

About the role

D-Wave is seeking an EDA (Electronic Design Automation) Tool Developer to join our Integrated Circuit (IC) Design team, which builds the chips at the heart of our quantum computers. These chips are some of the most complex superconducting integrated circuits ever fabricated and require a sophisticated, customized EDA toolchain.

We use a combination of commercial, open-source, and internally developed tools to enable this work. You’ll contribute to building, extending, and maintaining this ecosystem in collaboration with IC designers, engineers, and scientists.

The IC Design team is part of the Processor Development (PD) group, which leads the advancement of our quantum computing hardware. This is a software engineering role at the intersection of physics and hardware design. Your work will directly impact our quantum processor architecture and its capabilities. If you’re passionate about software development, complex systems, and collaborating across disciplines, we want to hear from you.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain a homogenized toolchain/design flow for deployment on multiple systems, including servers and local systems.
  • Extend our in-house electromagnetic simulation toolchain and modeling infrastructure.
  • Build tools for EDA, including a circuit topology extractor, an at-scale parasitics extractor, chip density homogenization tools, incremental verification tools, and many more.
  • Evaluate commercial and open-source EDA tools from vendors, compare against requirements, capabilities, and alternatives and integrate or extend them as needed.
  • Customize tools and workflows to match our specialized fab processes and quantum hardware requirements.
  • Automate, oversee, and maintain chip documentation and revision workflows.

About You

  • Post-secondary degree in electronic engineering, computer science, physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with EDA tools at scale and the ability to contribute to their development or integration.
  • Strong programming skills multiple languages (e.g., Common Lisp, Python, C++) and paradigms.
  • Understanding of algorithm complexity and performance tradeoffs.
  • Proficiency in Linux based development environments.
  • Experience collaborating in software development teams and managing toolchains or infrastructures.

 Bonus Skills (Nice to Have):

  • Integrated circuit design experience, including circuit simulation, EM simulation, layout, parasitic extraction, and verification.
  • Knowledge of superconducting or analog circuit design.
  • Good understanding of the physics of electricity and magnetism, especially around superconductors.
  • Experience developing EDA tools or toolchains.
  • Experience with containerization of tools, for example using Docker.

Requirements

Please note that we are hiring across multiple career stages based on individual skills and proficiencies related to these requirements:

Intermediate (II): At the Intermediate level, you will build technical proficiency, become familiar with our EDA environment, and contribute to well-scoped projects under regular guidance. You will:

  • Contribute to parts of our toolchains that support chip development and verification.
  • Receive frequent mentorship and feedback from colleagues.
  • Grow your understanding of superconducting IC design and quantum hardware.

You’ll bring:

  • A graduate degree with relevant specialization, 0-2 years of experience, or
  • A bachelor’s degree, 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Academic exposure to algorithms, EDA, and software development practices.

Senior: At the Senior level, you will lead substantial development efforts, contributing to and improving core EDA capabilities. You’ll work across multiple tools, teams, and projects with increasing independence. You will:

  • Take ownership of medium to large projects with lasting impact on our toolchain.
  • Identify limitations in current workflows and propose technical solutions.
  • Provide mentorship to junior developers and collaborate across domains.

You’ll bring:

  • All qualifications of the Intermediate level.
  • 3+ additional years of experience (can include relevant graduate research).
  • Proven ability to work across multiple languages, codebases, and toolchains.
  • Demonstrated impact on an EDA or similar technical workflow in a professional setting.
  • Applied understanding of algorithm complexity, EM simulation, or EDA systems.

Staff: At the Staff level, you will act as a domain expert and technical leader, shaping how EDA supports our evolving quantum hardware. You’ll be expected to lead technically, influence organization direction, and mentor others. You will:

  • Drive strategic improvements in EDA workflows as technology and requirements evolve.
  • Identify and resolve architectural or systemic limitations in our toolchain.
  • Set direction on tool design and integration, balancing technical and project constraints.
  • Mentor across teams and provide deep technical leadership.

You’ll bring:

  • All qualifications of the Senior level, plus deeper experience and impact.
