This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Sydney CBD. There are approximately 380 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 500 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Netherlands, Denmark, Mexico and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.

About the role

DroneShield is seeking an Algorithms Team Lead to drive the next generation of our world-leading drone detection technology. In this role, you’ll guide a talented, multidisciplinary team - spanning AI/ML, digital signal processing, and software engineering - pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in electronic warfare and counter-drone systems. 

As a key leader in our Sensors & Effectors group, you’ll shape technical strategy, deliver cutting-edge solutions with real-world impact, and mentor top engineers in a fast-growth, mission-driven environment. Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations  

  • Lead a team of Engineers from a range of disciplines (AI/ML, Algorithms, Digital Signal Processing, Software) to build next-generation drone detection algorithms 
  • Develop technical and execution strategy for the research and development of best-in-class solutions 
  • Bring business context to engineering practice, keeping the focus on delivery of value 
  • Define and run projects, and be accountable for their successful execution 
  • Establish and promote best practices in algorithm design and software development 
  • Ensure deliverables are well tested across a range of products and use cases 
  • Work across the business to identify and resolve logistical and resourcing problems 
  • Manage and grow a group of highly capable and motivated engineers, providing regular guidance and mentorship 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience 
  • Experience leading a team of Engineers (3+ years) 
  • Experience with AI/ML based systems (3+ years) 
  • Experience with Python, and one or more compiled languages (C/C++ preferred) 
  • Experience with JIRA and Confluence, or similar products 
  • Ability to translate business requirements and objectives between the engineering and executive team 
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, communicating effectively with engineers from non-software / data science backgrounds 
  • Track record for delivering commercial solutions through the entire life cycle 
  • Electronic Warfare (EW) or Radio Frequency (RF) experience is highly valued
