Boston Legacy FC (the “Club”) is Boston’s new professional women’s soccer team, set to begin play in the National Women’s Soccer League in 2026. The Role
Boston Legacy FC is seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Head Athletic Trainer to support and guide the medical team in player health management, evaluation, rehabilitation, and injury prevention within our professional women’s soccer organization. This role helps coordinate day-to-day medical care and works closely with our external medical partner, performance department, and coaching staff to optimize athlete health, performance, and availability.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the coordination of the Medical Team in the collective management of player health and performance.
- Manage the healthcare of athletes including, but not limited to, first aid/emergency care, on-site injury evaluation, application of appropriate modalities, development and implementation of rehabilitation and prevention programs, and scheduling of medical referrals.
- Monitor changes in the mental, psychological, and physical health of Players through daily interactions and communicate with or refer to appropriate Team Medical Staff as needed.
- Collaborate with the Director of High Performance and staff across the performance and medical departments to ensure integrated care and detailed performance planning.
- Maintain a complete and up-to-date roster of Player health and participation records in the League’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with Players, Team Medical Staff, Coaches, Team personnel, and League staff.
- Maintain professional liability insurance.
- Support nutrition initiatives alongside the team dietician to enhance player recovery and injury prevention.
- Provide guidance to assistant athletic trainers and support staff, helping promote a culture of professionalism and high standards.
- Comply with all League medical policies and protocols.
- Initiate insurance/Workers’ Compensation claims for Players.
- Abide by all local, state, and federal laws and regulations specific to the profession, the codes and standards of governing bodies, and all applicable League Rules and Team policies (e.g., informed consent, medication management).
- Consult with Players regarding dietary needs and nutritional supplements; maintain familiarity with WADA/FIFA banned substances and GlobalDRO.com, referring to the CMO/PCSM Team Physician/RD as appropriate.
- Attend all required League-mandated activities, meetings, and programs.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Board of Certification (BOC) as an Athletic Trainer; current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; advanced certifications (ATLS, ACLS) preferred.
- Minimum 4 years’ experience as an athletic trainer in professional or elite women’s soccer or comparable team sports.
- Expertise in injury prevention, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-play protocols.
- Knowledge of soccer-specific movement patterns, injury mechanisms, and performance demands.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and athlete management systems (e.g., Kitman Labs).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with players, coaches, medical, and performance teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in professional women’s soccer
- Soccer playing experience
- 4+ years leading a high performance medical team
- Certifications such as Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), or Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES)
