Careers at Soluna

System Administrator

Soluna is on a mission to solve one of renewable energy’s biggest challenges: wasted power. Our data centers convert excess solar, hydro, and wind energy into productive computational work, such as Bitcoin mining, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. By co-locating with renewable power sources, we bring demand directly to the source, helping power plants increase revenue while contributing more megawatts to the grid.

We are seeking a System Administrator to take ownership of our infrastructure deployed at each datacenter.  This role requires a broad skillset to address the variety of challenges faced by our systems.   On any given day you may be required to develop a backup system for a datacenter control system, improve observability of host or network gear, or work with the entire Engineering team to build and improve deployment processes.  Improving the security posture of our sites will be a top priority.

This role is not a traditional System Administrator role and will expose you to many new technologies and skillsets.  We are looking for a candidate who can be flexible and work around uncertainty while building the necessary infrastructure to operate our facilities, but who will not compromise on quality or reliability.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage our Proxmox deployments, develop backup systems and improve observability.
  • Manage our deployed operating systems, primarily Ubuntu but including FreeBSD and Windows.
  • Improve observability of our control system and network infrastructure.
  • Improve the security posture of our facilities.
  • Work with software and network engineers to reduce manual work required for configuration and deployment of our systems via automation.
  • Train on-site technicians to perform regular maintenance on deployed equipment.
  • Improve the software test environment (miniMaestro) deployment in order to streamline the software test process.
  • Visit our sites occasionally for stand-ups and maintenance as necessary (<5%).

About the Stack

Our control system, Maestro,  is unique and proprietary to Soluna.  Maestro  has been developed from the ground up to meet the requirements of our green energy powered data centers and the specific contractual requirements at each installation site.  Maestro is currently primarily deployed as a NodeRed control system backed by an ArangoDB configuration database, a Mosquitto MQTT communication layer, and an Elixir based data collection process.  Maestro is a distributed system across our facilities on top of Ubuntu VMs and Proxmox VEs.

Our sites have networks designed specifically for the unique requirements of our curtailing datacenters.  We operate a mix of network gear including TP-Link/Omada and Juniper.

Our data infrastructure is based on AWS and ClickHouseDB. We utilize Kinesis and Lambda for data ingestion. We operate a Dagster instance to post-process data collected from our facilities into useful data products for internal teams.

What You Need to Get the Job Done

  • A willingness to learn new skills and think creatively to improve existing systems is crucial to this role.
  • Communication skills are critical as we are a fully remote company and this role will rely heavily on the site technicians to effect physical changes.

Specific experiences and skills that would be helpful:

  • Experience in our stack (Proxmox, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, TP-Link, Juniper)
  • Experience working remotely via on-site technicians.
  • Network and OS security experience.
  • Experience or desire for experience in site reliability engineering.
  • Experience in virtualization (VMs and container technologies).
