Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist / Manager

The planet urgently needs safe, reliable, zero-carbon energy without waste. Nuclear fusion can address the scale of this problem, but for decades, existing fusion approaches have not proven a net positive energy gain. Zap Energy has rethought the fundamental technology of fusion. As the only company using sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch, we present potentially the fastest path to commercially available fusion energy. 

Zap Energy is a growing and expanding our warehouse, laboratory, and office workspace across multiple locations. We have a safety-commitment to our teams and are looking for an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist or Manager to join us in our mission to successfully develop scalable fusion energy. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and support a comprehensive, empowered safety culture within a dynamic research and development environment. 
  • Build, administer, and instruct safety training, procedures, and compliance systems tailored to the various internal audiences. 
  • Partner with internal teams including facilities, lab management, supply chain, human resources, finance, and technical teams to achieve objectives and maintain a safe and compliant workplace. 
  • Proactively engage with employees at all levels to better understand their concerns and work hazards, as well as facilitate all aspects of daily safe work conduct. 
  • Continually assess environment, health, and safety risks of Zap Energy operations and make recommendations to teams and company leaders. 
  • Provide technical expertise in occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, and sustainability. 
  • Drive thorough investigations for all incidents and accidents for all sites and ensures timely completion of corrective actions. 
  • Lead the team in developing effective root cause analysis and countermeasures. 
  • Keep up to date on regulatory requirements and industry trends. 
  • Proactively plan for and share considerations with leadership for future facilities, processes, equipment, suppliers, and materials. 
  • Engage with relevant consultants, external agencies, and other regulatory organizations at the local, state, and national level.  

Qualifications

Manager - Required:

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Environmental, Health, and Safety or related field 
  • 10+ years of total EHS experience 
  • 3+ years of experience managing an EHS team 
  • 5+ years of EHS experience in a corporate laboratory / research and development (R&D) environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deploy and administer EHS Programs in R&D organizations 
  • Excellent verbal, written and customer service skills  

Specialist – Required: 

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Environmental, Health, and Safety or related field 
  • 7+ years of total EHS experience 
  • 5+ years of EHS experience in a corporate laboratory / research and development (R&D) environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deploy and administer EHS Programs in R&D organizations 
  • Excellent verbal, written and customer service skills 

Preferred: 

  • Direct experience successfully managing the following hazard classes in corporate laboratory / R&D environments: 
    • High Voltage – Including arc flash 
    • Functional Safety 
    • Thermal / Hot Work 
    • Chemical – Including reactive caustic metals 
    • Lasers 
    • Compressed gases 
    • Pressure vessels 
    • Confined spaces 
    • Radiological

Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact and scalable fusion energy platform that confines and compresses plasma without the need for expensive and complex magnetic coils. Zap’s sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch technology offers the shortest potential path to commercially viable fusion and requires orders of magnitude less capital than traditional approaches. Zap Energy has over 60 employees in two facilities near Seattle and is backed by leading financial and strategic investors.

The pay range for this role is:

100,000 - 140,000 USD per year (Specialist)

135,000 - 165,000 USD per year (Manager)
