Kraken Robotics is currently seeking a Drawing Office Lead to join our team in Mount Pearl, NL or Dartmouth, NS.
As a Drawing Office Lead with Kraken Robotics, you will play a key role in the support, definition, and maintenance of Kraken's product portfolios. You will primarily be responsible for overseeing the production of error-free technical drawings, 3D models, and design verification documentation. You will manage the workflow of the drawing office, ensuring that all deliverables meet company and industry standards in a timely manner. As the Drawing Office Lead, you will also play a key role in our Engineering Change Process by ensuring that changes are executed based on approved scopes and that the metadata of inputs and drawings are properly maintained.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor a team of mechanical and electrical Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) Technicians.
- Ensure that all deliverables produced by the department follow company-wide standards, industry-wide regulations, and applicable safety codes.
- Perform scope intake and ensure drawing requests are handled, prioritized, assigned, and delivered in a timely manner.
- Identify potential bottlenecks early in a scope of work to ensure they can be addressed before they become a roadblock.
- Be responsible for monitoring tasks to ensure scopes are progressing per required deadlines.
- Perform rigorous quality checks on all deliverables produced by the department to ensure accuracy with provided technical specifications.
- Work within established company procedures and frameworks to ensure that no detail is missed during the release to production pipeline.
- Be responsible for task close outs, ensuring that all deliverables have been produced in accordance with company standards and task requirements.
- Optimize workflows and intra-team communication to maximize efficiency and minimize production gaps.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and production teams to ensure that design intent is effectively communicated and technical hurdles are eliminated before they get in the way of production.
- Assist in the design of mechanical components and electrical systems using 2D and 3D CAD software, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, and project requirements.
- Develop and maintain documentation to support Kraken’s products and systems including various types of mechanical drawings, electrical drawings, manuals, procedures, training material, interface instructions, etc.
- Responsible for the implementation, tracking, and execution of engineering change requests and orders in accordance with Kraken’s engineering change procedures.
- Development and maintenance of 3D models and 2D drawings with consideration toward fabrication processes, inspection processes, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Ensure that approved outputs are accurately uploaded to ERP systems for approval and release to production.
- Manage product data and documentation using Product Data Management and SVN software ensuring accurate version control and revision history.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, ILS, Production, Supply Chain Management, Configuration Management, Documentation Management, Project Management and Business Development Support to advise them in the applicable use of drawing standards and documentation control procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Naval Architecture, or equivalent.
- Experience leading a team of individuals toward a common goal.
- 8+ years of general drafting experience.
- Experience in the use of 2D and 3D CAD software for modelling and drafting of mechanical and/or electrical systems.
- Experience using SolidWorks (or equivalent) for the creation of mechanical manufacturing and production drawings
- Experience using Zuken E3.Cable (or equivalent) for the creation of electrical schematics.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM and/or SVN (or equivalent) for document approval, versioning, and file structure organization.
- Experience in the use of GD&T.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, drawings, and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Great communication skills with the ability to collaborate with other departments and project teams.
- A keen eye for detail to catch technical errors.
- A process driven mind with a passion for creating systems which improve efficiency and a personal commitment to do the little things the right way to maximize deliverable quality.
- Ability to pivot between high-level delivery approvals and hands-on drafting work.
- Prior experience in Marine, Robotics, or Microelectronics industries considered an asset but not required.
